What Type Of Acne Do I Have?

Acne comes in all shapes and sizes and we wish they wouldn’t show up at all. However, we must confront the fact that they will pop up and rear their ugly head at us. Not only are they a nuisance, but depending on the type of acne you have plays a big part on how to treat them effectively. Here are different types of acne you might currently be experiencing right now.

Blackheads

Small blemishes with black dots are blackheads. Blackheads have no inflammation, so dermatologists refer to blackheads as comedones.  A blackhead is an open pore that is filled with oil and skin debris that is either grey or black. The dark colour happens because of the collection of melanin pigment in the pore that oxidizes. Not all blackheads are black. Some blackheads can be yellowish if the pigment fails to oxidize.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are also spots with no inflammation, so they too are comedones just like blackheads. However, instead of having a tiny black dot, it’s white.

However, there’s a thin layer of skin that cover the pore and prevents it from oxidizing. That’s why it remains white or yellowish, which is the natural colour of sebum and dead white blood cells.

Papules

When whiteheads start to get inflamed, you have papules. They are pink or red shaped bumps that don’t contain fluid or pus. They are not painful and are caused by increased oil and bacteria that is trapped inside the pore by dead skin cells. The redness from inflammation comes from your body’s immune system fighting off the infection with white blood cells.

Pustules

Pustules are like papules, but the greatest difference is that pustules contain pus. It also helps you to remember the name. They look a lot like whiteheads on steroids and can feel painful to the touch.

Try waiting for a whitehead to be visible before attempting to squeeze it away. Trying to extract a pustule immediately could leave you with a nasty scar.

Nodules

When your acne gets worse, you could end up with nodules that are bigger than pustules and papules and develop deep under the skin.

They are painful to the touch and solid.  They mature when oil and bacteria deep inside the pore spreads and infects connecting follicles.

Cysts

If nodules weren’t bad enough, they could harden into deep cysts that can leave you with awful scars and disfigurement. Cystic acne is the most severe type of acne you could get. The cysts are usually deep, painful, pus filled bumps that are very large and noticeable.

Cystic nodular acne is hereditary and very common with males. The best solution is to visit your professional dermatologist for a suitable acne treatment.

Whatever type of acne you have, we recommend seeking an appropriate treatment for it right away. Severe acne, which is deep cysts and nodules, should be dealt with by a professional. Mild to moderate acne however, which consists of comedones, papules and pustules, can be treated with over the counter acne remedies.

How To Significantly Reduce Acne Scarring

Acne Scarring Or Just A Mark?

Before we start on the topic of acne scarring reduction, it’s important that we actually define what acne scarring is. The red, purple or brown marks that appear after a breakout are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (aka PIH). When you decide to squeeze a pimple, you’re essentially opening up your skin, so when it heals (closing itself back up) the colour, texture or tone will be different from the rest of your skin, those broken blood vessels can leave a mark. Bear in mind that those with richer skin tones are

more prone to PIH whether or not they decide to pinch a spot (and it takes a little longer to fade, usually at least four months, but this depends on the individual, their genetics and lifestyle habits.

So What Is Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring is permanent indents that appear when the collagen in your skin has been damaged. Think of an acne lesion as a wound, once the skin has been damaged, your body responds by overproducing or not producing enough tissue, and as a result, scarring can range in appearance and texture from thick and raised, keloid (scars that have over healed and look and feel rubbery) or atrophic scars (a result of too little tissue), which are the most common when it comes to acne scarring. They come in the following categories

Ice pick: Jagged edges, narrow and around 2mm or less deep

Boxcar: Rectangular edges, deep and quite defined

Rolling scars: Broad, rounded edges, often referred to as ‘orange peel’

Top 6 Tips

Use Sunscreen

UVA and UVB rays can supercharge the cells in your skin that produce pigment, making your scars and marks to darken. Look for face moisturisers with an SPF of at least 15 that are non comedogenic (won’t clog your pores) note that some sunscreen products have a tendency to leave a white cast, so be wary!

Get Some Vitamin C In Your Skincare Regimen

Vitamin C helps to brighten skin, build collagen and promote healing. Invest in a high quality serum with pure L-ascorbic acid that will absorb into your skin and keep working even after it dries.

Use A Derma Roller Once A Week

A derma roller is an instrument with tiny needles attached to it, ranging from 0.5 to 1mm (for the face), by rolling it over scarred tissue, mini punctures are created on the skin’s top layer, your body will attempt to heal these wounds, resulting in renewed skin cells and skin repair. It also helps with collagen production.  After derma rolling, gently pat a few drops of vitamin c serum all over your face.

Apply Some Retin-A Before Bed

Retin- A is a vitamin A derivative that helps to loosen and slough off dead skin cells meaning that fresh, new skin cells can come to the surface. It makes your skin super sensitive to the sun – another reason to wear SPF!

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel will help with improving your skin’s appearance as well as texture. For example, glycolic acid helps to speed up the exfoliation process, improving skin appearance and tone. Whilst you can opt for an at-home peel, working alongside a dermatologist who can cater the treatment towards your skin type and skin goals, and can increase the concentration accordingly over time for the best results.

Try Dermefface FX7

Made by US based skincare specialists Skinception, Dermefface FX7 is a doctor approved, cleverly formulated topically applied treatment that has, In clinical trials, helped users to drastically reduce and in some cases completely remove cases of acne scarring… Available throughout Australia, its manufacturers also provide a generous cash back guarantee – reduce the appearance of your scarring, or your money back

How To Get Rid of Back Acne

Acne can form anywhere that has sebaceous glands (responsible for the production of sebum, oil and hair follicles), which means those pesky pimples can appear anywhere except the palms of your hands and feet. Andrea Craig, National Educator of Murad Skincare told Marie Claire that “The skin on your back has larger pores in comparison to your face which means they are far more likely to become clogged. This is why it’s best to look for products that are specifically designed for the body to treat back acne”. So how do you get rid of your back acne (bacne)? We’ve got some top tips to help you get started!

(1) Firstly, make sure that you’re on your best bacteria blasting game when it comes to showering, especially after sweaty activities like a good gym session. The area between your skin and your clothing is the perfect situation for bacteria to breed, resulting in bacne, so showering ASAP washes away the bacteria before it has the chance to clog up your pores.

(2) Whilst we’re on the subject of gym clothing and bacteria, avoid tight fitted clothing. We know you want to look cute at the gym, but spandex material traps oil and moisture, preventing your skin from breathing and inevitably causing clogged pores and bacne. Opt for cotton clothing instead, especially during your workouts.

(3) Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! As we mentioned before, the pores on your back are larger than the ones on your face, which means they’re more likely to become clogged. Use a body scrub two to three times a week to slough off dead skin cells (and prevent clogging), as well as clearing clogged pores. It’ll also help with the overall tone and texture of your back by helping with resurfacing new skin cells.

(4) Try spot treating with tea tree oil** and witch hazel. Tea tree oil has powerful antibacterial properties, whilst witch hazel is an astringent that helps to kill harmful bacteria, soothe redness and inflammation, as well as balancing oil production and shrinking pores. Add 20 to 40 drops of each to your favorite moisturiser and use as normal.

(5) **Tea Tree oil is a key component in Australia’s best selling Acne treatment Exposed Skincare, coupled with a blend of both natural and scientifically developed acne busting compounds, the extensive range of Exposed Skincare products are so effective that the manufacturers offer a special cash back guarantee – Clearer skin in 30 days or your money back!!

Thats too good to miss and means that you have nothing to lose by trying it (except your acne)

What Causes Back Acne?

According to Acne.org, studies have shown that people with face acne often suffer from a form of body acne too – usually on their back or chest. But what causes back acne (or bacne)? Here are the top five offenders.

1) Sweat – When we sweat, it mixes with oil and toxins on the skin’s surface. Combine this with the fact that pores are open due to a rise in body temperature, and it’s a recipe for clogging, and this causes back acne.

2) Clothing – Tight fitted, spandex clothing against your skin means that it doesn’t have room to breathe, which is irritating and results in irritated, clogged pores. When you couple this with sweat from a strenuous workout, it can be a very problematic environment for your skin! This also goes for bra straps, and in fact any item of clothing that comes into close/permanent contact with your skin.

3) This brings us onto our third culprit – Acne Mechanica. It’s a form of acne that isn’t widely spoken about, but it’s predominantly caused by irritation on the skin, when something rubs on its surface, such as a backpack, or a bra strap as we’ve mentioned. As bacteria thrive in environments with moisture, a backpack, with a tight bra strap and an equally tight top is a field day for bacne to roam.

4) Bed sheets – Your bed sheets absorb the oils and dirt from your skin, and this builds up over time if it’s not washed regularly, leading to bacteria, which is transferred back from the bed sheets to your skin, causing back acne.

5) Hair products – yep! When you’re washing your hair in the shower, the ingredients in your shampoo can run down your back, contributing to clogged pores. Also, your hair spray, leave in conditioner or hair oil also transfers oils and dirt to your skin, particularly when it’s down – so keep your hair (and bacne) off your back!

If You Are Suffering From Back Acne and you just simply cannot get rid of it, can we suggest that you check out the range of Exposed Skincare products…

Scientifically researched and developed by specialist dermatologists, the entire Exposed Skincare acne care range is natural, and highly effective at reducing acne breakouts – wherever they are on the body… Guaranteed to leave you with clearer skin in 30 days or your money back – Exposed Skincare comes highly recommended and is most certainly top of our shopping list.

Top Causes of Adult Acne & How to Prevent It

4 Ways To Reduce Those Breakouts

(1) Digestive Problems

There are two types of bacteria in your digestive system – the good and the bad and they’re both needed to digest food and create vitamins. However, long term antibiotic consumption, stress, sleep deprivation, processed foods and a lack of probiotics can mean that the harmful bacteria takes over, disrupting digestion and producing toxins.

Your gut wall keeps toxins out, but when the harmful bacteria create substances that attack the gut wall, cracks appear (known as a leaky gut). Bacteria, viruses, fungi, indigested food and toxins can all seep into your body and wreak havoc. This can cause food allergies (the immune system sees food that hasn’t been completely digested as an invader and ‘attacks’ it), inflammation and nutrition problems (aka the ingredients for acne!).

What Can I Do?

Introduce more probiotics into your diet, like yoghurt, kefir, naturally fermented pickles and sourdough bread. They all have live cultures (healthy bacteria) to help support a strong immune system. 80% of your immune system is actually located in your digestive tract, so a healthy gut means happy skin.

(2) You’re Eating Too Much Sugar

People with acne have a tendency to have higher inflammation levels than those with healthy skin. This can also causes gut problems, especially if we look at candida. Candida is yeast that lives in the skin and digestive tract, when you have too much sugar in your diet, it can grow out of control and cause problems in your gut, as well as inflammation. Excessive sugar consumption also increases blood sugar levels, which leads to insulin production, meaning oil production, blocked pores and acne.

What Can I Do?

Cut out processed sugar! No cookies, sweets, soft drinks or pastries. Opt for natural sugars in fruits like strawberries and blueberries. Also, play close attention to the Glycaemic Index (GI) of foods. The GI looks at how quickly a food increase blood sugar levels; choose wholegrain carbs over white bread or pasta, which have a lower GI number. Exercise (a mixture of cardio and strength training) to help with insulin sensitivity.

(3) You Have Imbalanced Hormones

Excess androgens (the male sex hormone) cause increased oil production, and feeds on the bacteria on the skin to form acne. PCOS is another condition in which women have an imbalance of hormones, usually associated with low levels of estrogen and progesterone, but high levels of androgens.

What Can I Do?

Lower your androgen levels by taking the vitex herb (in liquid form, follow the advised dosage, start on the 14th day of your cycle and stop on the first day of your period) or saw palmetto (320mg a day).

Avoid dairy, as an animal product, it has a sea of its own hormones that can be problematic for some when mixed with your own.

Eat a balanced diet and limit the consumption of processed foods, up your fibre and fatty fish intake and drink plenty of water.

Also…..

These 4 tips can make a huge difference to your acne, but if you still struggle with breakouts, then you could try what is currently Australia’s best selling acne treatment…

Called Exposed Skincare, the various products in the range are all tried, tested and proven to be very effective – So much so that the makers offer a unique cash back guarantee with a very simple promise –  Clearer skin in 30 days or your money back!!

Four Ways to Change Your Diet & Reduce Acne

There is a saying that “you are what you eat”, and nothing could be further from the truth when it comes down to your skin, and in particular Acne… If you do suffer from outbreaks you really do need to take a good, hard look at your diet and try to determine if you are eating something that could be making your acne worse.

Here are 4 areas that you can look at in order to help reduce your acne breakouts

1) Cut down on the sugar

A sugary diet is a playground for acne sufferers. Not only does sugar break down the collagen in your skin (the substance that keeps your skin plump and youthful) but it also weakens your immune system. It also causes inflammation, creating the perfect environment for acne bacteria to thrive. While it may not start the acne forming process, the inflammation combines with bacteria to stir things up.

Now we’ll give you the hormonal breakdown. People with acne prone skin are generally more sensitive to the male sex hormone (androgen). When you eat sugar (including carbohydrates) your blood sugar levels increase. In order to bring those levels back down, the pancreas releases insulin. When you’re eating excessive amounts of sugar, your body produces lots of insulin, and more insulin, means excessive sebum (oil) production and skin cell growth (and visible pores), which leads to blocked pores (and acne).

2) Add More Protein

So we know that carbohydrates/sugar cause a spike in blood sugar levels, but adding protein alongside a carb-rich meal helps to keep your blood sugar levels nice and steady. A 2003 American study revealed that people with type 2 diabetes who opted for a 30:40:30 ratio of protein to carbs and fat had a 40% lower blood sugar response than those with a 15:55:30 ratio.

3) Pay Attention To Food Intolerances And Allergies

Don’t forget that you are what you eat! Start a food elimination diet, removing dairy, refined sugar, gluten, corn, eggs and nuts from your diet for six to eight weeks. During this time, keep a diary, (you can take photos too!) and note down any changes you notice, aesthetically, mentally and emotionally. After this period, start reintroducing each food that you eliminated one by one, paying close attention to any changes. If your skin flares up – try to limit consumption of that particular food. It may be that your body has an immune response to that particular food, or just can’t break it down because the digestive enzymes that it needs aren’t there.

4) Include More Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Sometimes, we can have an imbalance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (leading to inflammation), so including fatty fish like salmon and mackerel (which are high in omega-3) is the way to go.  Apples, blueberries, cherries, spinach, kale and broccoli are great additions too. They all contain quercetin, an antioxidant and antihistamine, that stop your body from reacting to food intolerance through symptoms (e.g acne flare ups!). Work alongside a nutritionist or naturopath to achieve the best results, and create a diet specifically tailored to you and your nutritional needs.

If you can get your diet right, then you should see a noticeable reduction in your acne breakouts, obviously you still need to maintain a good skin care regime, by using a good quality range of skin/acne care products, cleansers, toners, moisturisers etc, its quite possible to eradicate acne breakouts virtually completely.

if asked, we wholeheartedly recommend the range of acne care products provided by Exposed Skincare, their entire range is cleverly developed and formulated by reputable skincare experts, they actually offer quite a bold guarantee – Clearer skin in 30 days or your money back!! sounds like a great deal to us!!

Celebrity Skin Lightening

The lure of healthy, revitalised, clear and bright skin is strong for many of us, seeing us flock online and to the high street to pick up a plethora of lotions, potions, oils and serums in the quest for perfect skin. It’s little surprise, then, that the global skincare market is estimated to reach $135 billion by 2021.

What’s behind our obsession? Well bright, healthy skin is closely linked to confidence levels and self-esteem, leaving us feeling great and giving the perfect base from which to make our make-up looks come to life. Under eye circles, discolouration and dark spots, meanwhile, can wreak havoc with our complexion, however, leaving us feel dull, lacklustre and unattractive.

And this is where skin lightening comes into the equation – there are stacks of treatments out there on the market to help you reach the perfectly porcelain look, while ridding the face of blemishes and dark spots, discolouration and all manner of imperfections.

What’s more, there are plenty of celebs jumping on the bandwagon too – here we chart our top five celebrity skin whitening fans.

‘Lil Kim

The feisty rapper claims that skin whitening has helped her to regain confidence and overcome body image issues that she’s experienced since childhood.

Beyoncé

While Beyoncé has never openly said she uses skin lightening products, her skin tone shows stark differences today in comparison to her Destiny’s Child days, with paler skin and more refined features.

Janet Jackson

Following in the footsteps of her brother Michael, Janet Jackson’s skin has undergone a dramatic transformation throughout the years, likely the result of skin lightening treatments.

Diana Ross

The original diva, soul icon Diana Ross has long been considered the pioneer of celebrity skin lightening, with her skin today boasting a lighter, brighter more matte look in comparison to her heyday with The Supremes.

Sammy Sosa

Ex-Chicago Cubs baseball star Sammy Sosa is perhaps the most startling example of the power of skin lightening treatments, having achieved a completely new, lighter skin complexion that has been attributed to a lightening cream.

Achieving Porcelain Perfection

While these celebs have all successfully achieved lighter, brighter skin tones, take care – there are plenty of products out there that don’t make the grade, relying on harsh chemicals that can damage the skin and cause more serious side effects.

Our advice? There are plenty of perfectly natural ingredients proven to soothe, revitalise and gently lighten the skin, without any of the risk. We’d recommend Zetawhite, which harnesses 100% natural ingredients like papaya, lemon and liquorice extracts to give you all of the results and none of the danger.

Skin Lightening Problems

If you’re interested in lightening your skin, you’re in good company. After all, who doesn’t what lighter, brighter, more radiant skin?  As skin brightening treatments of all kinds continue to emerge left, right and centre in response to growing demand, however, it can be difficult to know which one are safe.

What’s more, even the smallest amount of research clearly indicates that not all skin lightening treatments are created equal – as this market isn’t closely regulated, online marketplaces are fraught with dodgy, untested, unsafe and sometime even illegal lightening options. It’s little surprise then, that, that horror stories abound in the world of skin lightening.

The Mercury Factor

One thing in common among the skin lightening creams gaining bad press is the inclusion of mercury. While the manufacturer and distribution of mercury-based skin lightning creams is banned in Europe and the US, such products are easy to come by, and usage is commonplace in Africa and Asia.

Medical professionals alike are seeing huge increases in the number of women visiting clinics with symptoms of mercury poisoning. These appear gradually, over time, and include:

  • Tiredness
  • Irritability
  • Depression
  • Muscle weakness
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Metallic taste
  • Vomiting
  • Renal failure
  • Teeth loss
  • Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
  • Emotional instability
  • Forgetfulness

In other words, it pays to choose a skin lightening product that’s legal and mercury-free, so be sure to do your research first.

Irreparable Skin Damage

In addition to the dangers of mercury-heavy skin lighteners, poor quality products with cheap, untested ingredients are also seeing scores of women fleeing to skin specialists with sometimes irreversible damage.

Burns, scarring, the formation of dry scales and untreatable patches of skin darkening are all commonly experienced by women who have fallen foul of cheap and nasty products, often found on the hands, feet, cheeks, eyelids and foreheads. Here skin is often left thinner and more prone to infection, while acne and inability to heal are commonly reported. There have even been cases on skin cancer linked to long-term or frequently use of poorly-developed skin lightening products because of the way the damage the skin’s resilience.

A Safe, Natural Alternative

But while this may be enough to make you think that skin lightening isn’t worth the hassle, don’t give up just yet – there are plenty of all-natural ingredients proven to help the skin lighten with no dangers, side effects or scary horror stories.

Zetawhite is one such example of a truly all-natural skin lightening treatment manufactured to stringent quality standards.

This three-step treatment harnesses natural ingredients like papaya extract, lemon extract and liquorice extract to rid the skin of dead cells and pave the way for brighter, revitalised skin,

Now Available In Australia – Zeta White The Safe Way To Lighten Your Skin

Whiter, brighter skin needn’t be fraught with questionable ingredients, dodgy claims and horror stories of treatments gone awry – turns out it is possible to lighten the skin gently and safely, leaving you with fresh, bright revitalised skin that makes you the centre of attention.

Zetawhite is a brand new to the market product that’s making some serious waves. Encompassing a face wash, moisturiser and night cream, Zetawhite’s products are packed full of proven active ingredients that work to rid the skin of dead cells, brighten the skin and naturally whiten with powerful enzymes.

Let’s look at the nitty-gritty and see if this product truly makes the grade.

Zetawhite’s Formula

As this range consists of a whitening face wash, moisturiser and night cream, there’s a stack of different ingredients on offer, including scientifically proven allantoin, liquorice extract, lemon and papaya extract.

You can find the full list here.

Directions For Using Zeta White

For the face wash, use twice a day by applying a small amount to wet skin, massaging in a circular motion and rinsing

For the moisturiser, after cleansing, massage a liberal amount into the facial skin.

For the night cream, massage into the face and neck after cleansing, allowing the product to absorb as you sleep.

Our Thoughts

With so many lightening products out there some making making seriously over hyped claims, its difficult choosing one that really delivers on its promises…. with Zetawhite you have something that has solid scientific evidence behind it based on clinical trials… quite frankly its one of those rare lightening products that is both safe and effective – it works, and works really well!! we have no hesitation in recommending it to our readers..
